Practical approach and insight into refugee health care
Date: Monday 6th June 2011
Time: 6pm
Where: Monash Medical Centre - Seminar Room 4/5
Have you ever wondered about the health issues facing refugee and asylum seeker populations?
Would you like the opportunity to participate in an interactive session looking at cases with refugee health experts?
You’re invited to attend Monash Medical Centre (Seminar Room 4/5) from 6.00pm this coming Monday 6th June to receive insight into refugee health – pointers on approach to patients, tests to order/illnesses to suspect, screening required by Australian government prior to or on arrival and more – all via interactive case presentations.
After the events of the past few days regarding the mental health of an Afghani asylum seeker leading him to commit suicide in detention, as well as the ongoing debate as to Australian policy on asylum seekers and refugees, this is a forum to explore how we as healthcare workers can assist.
***Speakers: Dr Kelvin Lau and Dr Hao Cheng - experts in refugee health!

Past events
On 9th of May 2011, Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, in association with Crossing Borders and Ignite, will be hosting Dr Janet Bodycomb and Manita Ray (the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Philanthropic and Corporate Engagement Coordinator) to speak about the important issue of Refugee Health, one of the greatest challenges facing health care providers in the near future.
Each year the Commonwealth Government accepts some 13,000 people from refugee backgrounds through its Humanitarian Program. Refugees entering Australia have a higher rate of long-term medical and psychological conditions than other migrants, tend to report a poorer state of wellbeing, and visit health care providers more frequently.
If you want to get involved in an event that focuses on global health on a local level, and are passionate about improving standards of health care in this country, then this event is for you!
