Begun in 2004 by a group of passionate and motivated Monash University students, Ignite runs a variety of International Health projects and events in partnership with Global Health groups in Australia and overseas!

Monash University and Burnet Institue Workshop
Thursday April 8th, 2010

Monash University and the Burnet Institute will additionally be hosting a workshop on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the Burnet Institute, Prahran. The day-long workshop will focus on action to address the social determinants of urban health and health equity in low-, middle- and high-income countries. It will bring together knowledge generators and knowledge users concerned with urban health equity. The main aim is to identify the critical environmental, social and physical urban issues that can be acted upon to improve health equity in cities in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

The morning session will introduce key issues in research and evidence for action on the social determinants of health, specifically in urban settings in low- and middle-income countries to improve urban health equity. Speakers include Professor Lyndsay Neilson, University of Canberra; and Professor Geoffrey Setswe, Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa, and Monash South Africa; and Professor Paul James, United National Global Compact Cities Programme, RMIT. The afternoon debate and dialogue will provide an opportunity to discuss implications for policies and action on social determinants of health and health equity in urban settings.

This workshop is free to all participants.

AMREP WORLD HEALTH DAY
Wednesday April 7th, 2010

The theme for this year's WHO World Health Day and the 4th AMREP Global Health Conference is "The impact of urbanisation on the health of the world's population". The conference will be held on World Health Day, Wednesday April 7, 2010 at Ormond Hall, Prahran. The conference will have two inter-related themes:

Implications of urbanisation for the health of poor and disadvantaged populations
Multi-faceted approaches to improving maternal health in low-income settings

Speakers, panellists and participants from South Africa, China, India and around Australia will discuss and exchange ideas about how urbanisation affects the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children. According to the World Health Organisation, more than 50% of the world's population is living in cities, and this proportion continues to grow. Urbanisation affects the health of people in many complex ways in terms of infectious disease transmission, the role of people's living environments, and the rapidly increasing prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases and their associated risk factors. At present, more than one billion people live in urban slums and the World Bank forecasts that by 2035, cities will become the predominant sites of poverty.

Keynote speakers include: Professor Guo Yan, Peking University and former WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health; Dr Kiran Martin, Asha, India; Mr Murray Proctor, AusAID; and Professor KR Thankappan, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, India. Other speakers will include Ms Jill Gallagher, Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation; Ms Sue Ndwala, World Vision; Mr Todd Harper, VicHealth; and Professor Geoffrey Setswe, School of Health Sciences, Monash South Africa, and Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa.

This conference is organised by Monash University and the Burnet Institute, on behalf of the AMREP Global Health Consortium, with support from 'Compass' the AusAID-funded Women's and Children's Health Knowledge Hub and VicHealth. Win $200 in the AMREP and Ignite Photo Exhibition - second call out!!!!

As part of World Health Day as hosted by AMREP, a photo competition has been organised!!!

The top twenty photos will be displayed at the AMREP World Health Day forum held on the 7th April 2010. The participants at the World Health Day forum will vote on their favourite photo during the lunchtime and the winner will be announced at the end of the day's proceedings.

The winning photo will earn the photographer $200 that has been generously arranged by the AMREP World Health Day organising team.

The focus of this year's World Health Day event will be on the issues of urbanisation and women and children's health. We would encourage photographic entries to focus on these themes.

IFMSA Applications

The International Federation of Medical Students is calling for applicants to attend the IFMSA General Assembly and the IFMSA Regional Asia Pacific Meeting. Both will be held in Bangkok, Thailand in March 2010, however they are two separate events.

Registration for Inaugural Gathering- Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA)

October 23^rd

DEA students are hosting an inaugural gathering for medical students and interested others in Melbourne this December from the 5th to 7th, just prior to Copenhagen (COP) 15 (www.cop15.dk). It would be wonderful if you could attend. The purpose of the gathering is to raise awareness, educate and strategise collective action in the area of environmental health for 2010.

We have some interesting speakers - Colleen Hartland MLA, health economist Lisa Gold, DEA honorary secretary David Shearman, MAPW head Dr Bill Williams, various other DEA members and academics. Registration is $55 for 3 days or $20 per day (lunch included) and accommodation via billeting with Victorian DEA student members.
